Personal Stories Untold

I am pleased to announce that I have chosen one of the topics for my third novel. First, I would like to welcome all those who have recently subscribed to my newsletter! I appreciate all of you who support me by continuing to read these posts. The replies are always very encouraging, so please keep them coming.

Part of my objective in publication is to raise awareness for issues that are not widely publicized or that take a back seat to more prevalent trends. If you read my first two novels, you know this already. Over the past few years, I have had people share some very personal stories, unprompted by me. For example, at a book signing, a man in his late 40’s revealed that when he was a teenager, his parents murdered his older brother. He then entered the foster system, and the rest is history.

One of the most unforgettable accounts is from someone whose parents were involved in a cult. As a child, this person was forced to engage in sexual acts with adults. To hear this story was like experiencing something you would only see on TV. I never imagined writing about it, because I didn’t feel like I could do justice to something so horrific. Today I finished watching the four-part Starz documentary entitled, “Seduced,” which is about the NXIUM cult. Its most dedicated female followers ended up becoming branded sex slaves for its leader, Keith Reniere, who was just sentenced to 120 years in prison last month. I highly recommend watching the documentary and/or reading an informational article about NXIUM.

What prompted me to write about cults is that people are manipulated into doing something they think will improve their lives. In a guise of self-help leadership, cult masterminds gain hundreds of followers who end up with their lives destroyed, years wasted, and sometimes in death. This is obviously going to take some work and a lot of research. The novel will not be strictly about cult activity, but there will be a character who is a victim of one.
